Welcome to Concordia Lutheran Church.
Holy Week at Home
What should that look like?
Well, first and foremost remember this:
The events of Holy Week are a historical fact and our commemoration of them do not make them any more or less real. As we confess in the Apostle’s Creed, Jesus “suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead…” This is the work of our redemption and it is finished. Thanks be to God!
Does this mean that there is no point in our gathering together or, since we cannot gather during this particular Holy Week that it does not matter what we do on these important occasions?
Fill this coming week with God’s Word! It is a “lamp to your feet and a light to your feet”. God’s Word is enlightening! God’s Word is creative. The Psalmist wrote, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made.” God’s Word hasn’t lost a bit of that creative power! God’s Word is life-giving. Peter confessed this truth when he said, “Lord, to whom shall we go you have the Words of eternal life.” God’s Word is necessary, This is why the Bible says, “Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”
Do not lose heart. Fill this Holy Week with God’s Word. It is effective! God has promised, “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
To help you in this task, each day during Holy Week, beginning this Monday I will be recording a reading on the Passion of Christ for those who would like to follow along. I will be reading selected passages and offering a brief devotion. If you would like to read on your own you can pick one of the following sections of Scripture: Matthew 26-27, Luke 22-23, Mark 14-15, John 18-19.
One other special tool: On Good Friday we have a special devotion for your household. There are packets at church that you can pick up that have seven candles and holders along with a devotion that will guide you through Christ’s Words on the Cross. Call Pastor Wiist to arrange a time to pick up your packet.
